Dua Of Prophet Yunus (as)
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh
The famous dua of Yunus (AS) is well known as follows:

Yunus (as) prayed to Allah (swt) this dua when he was in the belly of the whale as he recognised the mistake he had made. This itself is a big thing, recognizing when you are in the wrong, unfortunately many people don’t acknowledge they have wronged let alone ask forgiveness.
If we further look into the situation Yunus (as) was in, that being he was alone – no one was with him, he didn’t have support from any other person, he was in a place where no one could find him. He was in a belly of a whale, which would have been dark, cold and his future bleak, so he would have been scared, shocked and absolutely petrified. The whale would have been going through the seas even at the bottom of the oceans, which is the lowest level any one can go.
Being in that situation, one can image the state Yunus (as) would have been in, scared of the unknown, fearful and restless.
The beauty of Yunus (as) story is what he does, which he turns to Allah (swt) as he knows there is no one who can help except the all mighty. In life one will recognise eventually at some point, that Allah (swt) is the only one.
Important lesson from Yunus (as) story is to ask ourselves what exactly did he do wrong that he found himself in this situation – can you say he committed a major sin, was he corrupt or did he oppress people – the answer is he did none of this. He made a mistake of not being patient enough with his people – are we patient with our parents, children, families and others the answer mostly like is no.
The dua can be analyzed by breaking it down into three parts:
1) La ilaha illa anta – (There is none worthy of Worship beside you) – this is the expression oneness of Allah – Tawheed. All prophets who were sent to this earth came with the message of worshiping Allah (swt) alone. This zikr alone has huge benefits and are heavy on the scales.

2) Subhanaka – (Glorification of Allah swt) – There are many benefits of reciting this phase alone, it is the most dearest words to Allah (swt).
3) Inni kuntu minaz-zalimin – [Surely, I am from among the wrongdoers] – this acknowledges the sin / wrong doing / mistake – Allah (swt) loves those who turn to him and repent and purify themselves, a person who constantly repents are the blessed with Allah (swt) mercy, kindness and will receive tranquility in their lives.
All the above shows a person who recite this small supplication constantly and sincerely Allah (swt) will surely assist you in relieving your distress, worries and all problems you face.
NUMBER OF TIMES TO RECITE: -Our advice is to first make sure you are reciting this dua or any other dua or a Quran verse, with the correct intention, with absolute sincerity and firm believe that should be the starting point.
To achieve this, close your eyes and place your mind in the situation Yunus (as) was in – imagine the desperate situation he was in, what was going through his mind and how afraid he must have been – then recite the dua. You will fine that you are able to muster that extra sincerity needed, the mind is powerful tool and we should utilize.
Amount of times to recite, we suggest a number for a small dua like this would be 10, 11, 21, 40, 70 and 100 are sound Sunnah numbers, key is to recite it regularly along with the rest of the daily amals we do.
Finally whilst reciting the Dua Of Yunus (as) consider this verses from the Quran:
“Verily, Allah (swt) will not change the condition of a people as long as they do not change their state themselves” – Quran 13:11
If we look at the muslim ummah today, how widespread is corruption, dishonesty and people being crafty & conniving, it has become the norm, to the extend that people don’t want to recognize what they are doing is wrong. If we want our duas to be accepted, our difficulties removed you must change your ways, become a believer of sound character, a person who goes out of their way to make sure their income is absolutely halal and an individual who acts in a way with others as they would like to be treated.
If there is one thing people should take from story of Yunus (as) it is to recognize the wrongs we do and change our ways for the better.
>>>REMEMBER: Allah (swt) will either accept your dua – relieve you of your burden, hardship and difficulties or provide you with patience (sabr).
