Virtues & Benefits Of Surah Yasin.
Surah Yaseen is a Makki chapter of the Qur’an – meaning it was revealed in Makaah the first stage of the revelation when the prophet (saw) was there. The chapter contains 83 verses and has frequent pauses and also short phrases, this has a direct affect on the soul.
If there is one surah of the Quran which I have benefited personally from greatly is this chapter, it has many virtues, benefits and is a miraculously amazing chapter of the Holy Quran. It is a gift from Allah (swt) for us to benefit spiritually and from the message it is conveying to us.
In the chapter Allah (swt) describes the dwellers of paradise in verses 55-58 as follows:
(55. Verily, the dwellers of the Paradise, that Day, will be busy with joyful things.) (56. They and their wives will be in pleasant shade, reclining on thrones.) (57. They will have therein fruits and all that they ask for.) (58. (It will be said to them): “Salam (Peace!)” — a Word from the Lord, Most Merciful.)
What a beautiful paragraph this is, Allah (swt) describing the dwellers of paradise in a simple way for people to get a glimpse of what awaits them if they follow the commandments of Allah (swt).
The phase of the paragraph, if you ponder over its meaning is breathtaking – the dwellers of the paradise will be given Salaams by Allah (swt) – imagine this, Allah (swt) opening Paradise for the believers. Infact it is said as people enter paradise the Angels will be standing at the entrance and giving Salaam to people – we take this as meeting and greeting those who enter – Amazing.
Throughout the Quran when Allah (swt) mentions paradise / reward, it is immediately followed by verse on hell / punishment – this is the beauty of the Quran – the balance and equilibrium it gives. Surah Yasin is no exemption.
The following verse (65) is worth pondering:
الْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَى أَفْوَهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَآ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْهَدُ أَرْجُلُهُمْ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْسِبُونَ
(65. This Day, We shall seal up their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will bear witness to what they used to earn.)
On the day of Judgement, your own body will testify against you, there will be no need for witnesses or evidence, the person themselves will be one to testify. You can hide your sins in this world but on the day there will be no hiding place.
The surah has basically three themes, which can be summarized as:
- Worshiping Allah (swt) alone – monotheism
- The prophet (saw) has come for all of mankind and is a true messenger, so follow what he is saying / teaching you
- The hereafter – the day of judgement is real, paradise awaits the believers / righteous and hell awaits the disbelievers / the oppressors
Here are some hadith on this Surah:
Surely everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Yaseen. I would love that it be in the heart of every person of my people. (Tafsir-al- Sabuni Vol.2)
Everything has a heart and the heart of the Glorious Quran is Surah Yasin, whoever reads Surah Yaseen, Allah records for them a reward equal to that of reading the whole Quran 10 times. (Tirmidhi)
Hazrat Jundub ibn Abdullah (R.A) narrates,”Whoever reads Yaseen at night seeking the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala he is forgiven.” (Ibn Habbaan)
“Recite Yaseen on those who are dying.” –Sanan Abi Dawud
There are some who consider the above hadiths on Surah Yasin as weak or even fabricated – in our opinion they are making a mistake as there are numerous hadith on Surah Yasin with different chains of narrators, which together gathers strength, in combination it shows there is something about this surah which makes it that bit special.
Also in terms of the science of hadith, as the chain of narrators gets longer the hadith becomes weaker and weaker – we think this what happen with the hadith on this Surahs – early muslim regarded them as sound hadiths but later it started to be consider weak.
We recommend read & recite this surah much as possible and in times of hardship / difficulties it is a must – Allah (swt) will find you ways to overcome the obstacles which you are facing or provide patience.
A TRULY AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL QURAN CHAPTER.
